London City, also known as the City of London or the Square Mile, is the historic and financial center of London, United Kingdom. It is a small area within Greater London, located in the southeastern part of the city. The City of London has a rich history dating back to Roman times. It was originally settled by the Romans in the 1st century AD and has been a hub of trade and commerce ever since. Today, it remains an important financial district. The City of London covers an area of approximately 1.12 square miles (2.90 square kilometres) and has a relatively small permanent population of around 8,000 people. However, during the day, the number of workers in the City increases significantly due to its role as a major financial center. London City is a global financial hub and houses the headquarters of numerous banks, financial institutions, and professional services firms. It is known for its stock exchange, the London Stock Exchange, and for being a major center for international finance. The City of London is home to several iconic landmarks and historic buildings, including St. Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London, the Bank of England, and the modern skyscrapers of Canary Wharf. The architecture in the area is a mix of ancient and modern, showcasing the city's diverse history. Despite being primarily a business district, the City of London also has cultural attractions. It is home to the Barbican Centre, one of Europe's largest cultural centers, which hosts concerts, theater performances, and art exhibitions. The Museum of London, located nearby, explores the history of the city. London City has excellent transport connections. It is served by multiple underground stations, such as Bank, Liverpool Street, and Monument. The area also has several bus routes and is well-connected to other parts of London. London City Airport, located in the eastern part of the city, provides convenient air travel options. The City of London has its own unique political structure. It is a separate ceremonial county and has its own Lord Mayor, distinct from the Mayor of London, who presides over the Greater London area. The city has its own governing body, the City of London Corporation, which oversees its operations. London City is a vibrant and bustling district, known for its financial prowess, historical significance, and cultural attractions. It is an integral part of London's identity as a global city.
